Welcome to the Berean Network
Welcome to the Berean Network website. We are an informal network of EPC churches seeking fellowship so that we might support one another and collaborate in ministry. We share the convictions listed below and are committed to living them out in our ministry decisions. Our heart is to partner with like-minded churches who adhere to the historic Reformed faith, practice the biblical pattern of male eldership, and embrace the enduring relevance of the gifts of the Spirit.
More specifically, we desire Presbyterianism that grounds authority in the courts of elders (sessions and presbyterys) rather than hierarchy, understands ordination and gender according to historic Scriptural standards, vigorously maintains the call of the Gospel to repent of sin and follow Jesus, and believes all the gifts of the Spirit are at work in the Body of Christ today. It is our shared conviction that careful study of the Scriptures not only broadly teaches the doctrines of historic Reformed orthodoxy but also affirms these five tenets.
If you are hungry for such a faith and a body of churches that share a warm and vibrant fellowship among both ruling and teaching elders, then we would love to hear from you. You may email us at [email protected]
Our Convictions
For the Bereans were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the Word with all readiness of mind, and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so. (Acts 17:11)
The Faith
We hold to The Faith (historic and apostolic), and thus we reject modernist and progressive views which compromise the Church.
Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. (Jude 1:3)
Classically Reformed
We are classically Reformed in our theological convictions.
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:8-10)
Biblical Eldership
We believe in the Biblical mandate of male elders, both teaching and ruling, to shepherd the church by teaching and defending apostolic doctrine.
This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you— if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. For an overseer, as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it. (Titus 1:5-9)
Complementarian Gender View
We hold to a complementarian view of gender, affirming the distinction between male and female, as evidenced in Scripture and natural law, as good and essential for full obedience to Christ.
[Jesus] answered, "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? (Matthew 19:4-5)
Continuation of Spiritual Gifts
We affirm the continuing work of all the gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Body of Christ.
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. (1 Corinthians 12:4-7)
It is our shared conviction that careful study of the Scriptures not only broadly teaches the doctrines of historic Reformed orthodoxy, but also affirms these five tenets. If you are hungry for such a faith and a body of churches that share a warm and vibrant fellowship with one another among both ruling and teaching elders, then we would love to hear from you.
